Letter from the President

Mosman Swans Newsletter

21 November, 2017

Dear Mosman Swans Members and JV Partners,

At the end of our 19th season, I'm pleased to report that the Mosman Swans Junior AFL Club is in very good shape, both in a Financial and Football sense. We held our AGM on Monday 13th November and, on behalf of our new committee, I am delighted to tell you that we have the financial and human resources in place to continue to grow our club.

I would like to thank our 2017 sponsors for helping us deliver such impressive financial results over the past year: Dixon Advisory, the Warringah Bowling Club and 2020 Dry Cleaning. I would also like to let our Members know that Dixon Advisory's annual investor conference is taking place on Thursday 30th November 2017 at the new International Convention Centre from 10am. This is Dixon's flagship event for the year, with 1000 clients expected to attend. The conference serves as a great way to get to know Dixon and to hear some informed opinion about investment markets. Dixon has extended an invitation to the Mosman Swans community to attend - the details of the conference are at the end of my letter in case you would like to attend.

I would like to also thank our volunteers who delivered such impressive footballing results over the past year. Our Committee, Coaches, Managers and Age Group Coordinators worked very hard to grow the club over the past year. In 2017, the Mosman Swans achieved record numbers of nearly 600 members across our junior and youth teams. I am particularly proud that we fielded a record four girls' teams across three age groups.

Our joint venture with Willoughby is working exactly as we intended. We field at least two teams in every established Boy's age group from Under 13s onwards, and we are working towards the same achievement across our Girl's divisions. We provide an avenue for elite players to find their way into the Swans Academy and sometimes into the Sydney Swans themselves. We also provide the opportunity for social footballers to play the game in a friendly, safe and fun environment.

We do not measure ourselves by premierships, but some on-field success usually follows when we do most other things right. This year, we had seven teams make Grand Finals and four teams win a Premiership Cup. Our achievements were recognised at the most recent AFL President's Meeting, where the Willoughby Mosman Swans were awarded Team of the Year for 2017 and received a Perpetual Trophy. The Mosman Swans has previously won this award four times in our short 19 year history - an incredible achievement.

There is more evidence that we are providing a real pathway to Senior Football for both boys and girls. We all know about the success that former Mosman Swans Dan Robinson and Callum Mills are having with the Sydney Swans. Erin McKinnon became a Giant star during the year, and we were very proud to present Erin with a Mosman Swans Life Membership Award at our Presentation Night for services to Girls' Footy. Nicky Steel won the Club Best & Fairest Award - our most prestigious player award - and may be soon following in Erin's footsteps.

Our other teams made us proud with their conduct and sportsmanship. Thank you to all of the Coaches and Players for conducting themselves with such distinction.

I would like to thank our hardworking volunteers for making the season so successful. Two are leaving the committee - our long-serving IT expert, Greg Steel, and our short-but-sweet serving Secretary, Beth Hart. We thank them for their service and wish them well.

To the Committee members returning in 2018, a big thank you for last year's effort and an even bigger thank you for your future commitment. The Executive of Rachel Thorley, Greg McCleay and Paul Toohey among others have done a power of work and are fronting up for more.

At our Presentation Night on September 11th, we announced that Justin Dethridge won the coveted Dan Milton Hine Award after giving eight years of stellar service to the Club. I don't think the Mosman Swans has ever seen a more passionate and committed Mosman Swan in our 20 year history. The Club would not be where it is today without Justin's efforts and we thank him for his continuing service.

There are many unsung heroes in our Club, but I would like to give a very big thank you to the Age Group Co-ordinators, who are the real workers behind the scenes supporting the coaches and managers and making sure that each team functions efficiently throughout the year. A big thanks to Andrew Jenkins (Girls Footy), Dan Musson (Auskick), Peter Tonkin (Under 9), Simone Marshall (Under 10), Annie Zukerman (Under 11), Brett Clarke (Under 12), Maria Martin (Under 13), along with our JV partner AGCs Andrew Kitchen (Under 14), Andrew Larkey (Under 15) and Chris Barnum (Under 17).

We have some new people getting ready to step up help out in the year ahead. Coby Miller has become our new Secretary. Janet Perich and Alison Boston joined the committee at the AGM. I know that our new members will continue to give kids, families, supporters, umpires, volunteers and the opposition the best AFL experience possible. If we keep this aim in mind, I'm sure that our 20th year as a club will be the Club's finest yet.

If you think you would like to help out the Committee in any way during 2018, please drop me a line. We are particularly interested in volunteers who might be able to assist us develop our online presence.

Otherwise, I look forward to seeing you all again in 2018.

Cheers & Cheers from the Red and the White,

Glenn Morgan

Mosman Swans President

Mosman Swans members are invited to attend the Dixon Advisory annual Investor Conference. The theme of this year's event is "Be Adaptive". In these uncertain times, you can learn how to adapt to the changing environment, hearing from some of Australia's leading financial experts as they forecasts risks and opportunities for the year ahead. You are most welcome to attend for the full day, but if time is a constraint you can just make it along to the final session from 4pm with Michael Pascoe followed by drinks and canapes. You can find the full agenda here. If you would like to attend, please just let me know and I will put you in touch with Dixon.
